Fighting Drug Abuse
Prescription drug misuse and abuse is a growing problem across the nation. To prevent improper use of controlled substance prescriptions, the CT Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) has a new Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) for identifying unusual drug use. To help them roll out the program, we developed a direct mail and advertising campaign for the DCP to educate physicians, nurse practitioners, physicians assistants, dentists, pharmacists and others on the benefits of using this new online system to address prescription drug misuse. For the direct mail campaign, we designed a brochure that was mailed to 20,000 prescribers and dispensers of controlled substance medications. The brochure explained how to log onto and use the PMP system to review controlled substance prescription records. A cover letter urged them to request a quick-reference card that offers advice on identifying and dealing with patients who may be misusing or abusing prescription drugs.
To support the direct mail campaign, we created ads for the Connecticut State Medical Society’s Connecticut Medicine magazine and Action newsletter, the CT State Dental Association’s newsletter, and the Connecticut Pharmacists Association’s Pharmacy Journal of New England. We also wrote and placed articles about the new program in Connecticut Medicine, Pharmacy Journal of New England, Connecticut Dental Society’s newsletter, and Connecticut Applied Practice Registered Nurses Society’s newsletter. Banner ads promoting the program were developed for the professional society websites and a poster was produced for use at trade show and medical association meetings.
